Myspace.com Imposter Foiled!
It came to my attention a few weeks ago that someone was on myspace.com posing as me. I couldn't believe my ears when I first heard the news, but then when I went to the link: http://www.myspace.com/vinylqueenmusings, I saw it for my eyes. Photos and complete chunks of text were all lifted from my site and used for this "Mistress VQ." I know that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but I really don't need that kind of ego stroking in my life. The thoughts that ran through my head of what this person COULD do while pretending to be me had me in a bit of a panic. I had to act and get the profile down asap.
After I sent off my first cranky email to myspace.com and asked them to remove the profile, I did a bit of baiting to see if the impostor would respond to my requests for a session, a mailing address, etc. Luckily he/she never responded so I don't think that there were false distance training sessions set up, but I will never have proof of that. All I can say is that if you were a friend of someone going by the handle MISTRESS VQ, it was not I. I haven't had an active myspace.com profile in over a year. I contacted a few professional cohorts who were on this person's friends list to let them know privately of the fraud, but I couldn't do it for every single person. I'm hoping this blog entry is read by at least a few.
It took a lot longer to get the offending profile removed than I first anticipated. I contact myspace.com on four separate occasions, following their procedure for identity fraud, but I never got a response to any of my correspondence. It was only after contacting their COPYRIGHT AGENT that I was able to make any headway. Thus, if you have been a victim of identity fraud on that site, skip to the copyright infringement procedure and you'll get much faster results.
I am thankful that Mistress VQ is no longer able to use my name in cyberspace, but I'm sure it won't be the last time this happens. Thus, if you see me on a website like myspace.com, friendster, or facebook--don't hesitate to verify that the person behind the profile is really me. The easiest thing to do is just call my contact number and ask. That was how I found out the VQ impostor in the first place: a phone call from a client who wasn't getting any responses to his myspace.com messages to me. Don't believe everything see online people. There is a lot of fraud out there!
